Amazing holidays on a shoestring

During the cold and dark winter months our thoughts often turn to holidays. The lure of lying on a beautiful beach soaking up the sun’s rays or exploring a new and exciting location spurs us on to dig out the holiday brochures, pay a visit to the travel agents or more and more frequently go online to search for the perfect holiday.

The budget for this holiday is usually the determining factor when it comes to choosing a getaway but with careful planning and sometimes being prepared to take a risk an amazing, yet affordable holiday is still achievable.

Choosing a destination is the first saving that can be made as often less well-known holiday destinations can be much less expensive. For instance, Croatia and Bulgaria have become popular in recent years. Another location worth a mention is Lake Sevan in Armenia. Located in western Asia it is a must see for anyone wanting a breath-taking holiday and although relatively underdeveloped the locals are friendly and welcoming to tourists.

When considering the type of accommodation money can be saved by looking beyond the usual hotels and guesthouses and choosing a hostel many of which now have ensuite rooms.

So, with some thought and an open mind a holiday on a shoestring is possible.

Your first safari trip – planning is essential

If you are planning on booking your very first safari trip then it can be a little daunting. You may be surprised by the number of options you have in terms of the type of safari you want to do and the accommodation you would like to stay in. Most good safari holidays costs thousands of pounds, so it may be that you have been saving up for a number of months or years or that you are planning one as part of a special trip for an anniversary, honeymoon or birthday for example. This is often an even bigger reason to ensure that it all goes to plan and that your experience is one to remember for all the right reasons.  

Ideally you will want to do plenty of research and read reviews to find out which types of safari trips will suit you and the other people in your group. If for example, you have children travelling with you then you will need to find a safari lodge that advertises that its family friendly and ensure if going to Africa, it is in a malaria free zone.  Once you have a better idea of the options available you, you can then start to find out costs from different travel agents to find the best price. Looking online will often give you the most options as there are many specialist companies that offer safari trips but do not have physical premises.

Cycle Safari in East Africa

South Africa is a magnificent country and has a lot to offer to people of all ages and interests. You may usually think of a Big five jeep safari in South Africa but there are a number of other activities that it can offer.

Have you ever considered a cycling safari holiday in East Africa. If like me, probably not, as I was not even aware that you could do one. Some people may have already experienced the usual drive by safari holiday and looking for something a little different, well if you enjoy cycling, this may be the package holiday for you.

Tanzania is a great place to experience a cycling safari allowing you to explore the local surroundings and wildlife on two wheels. The holiday last 14 days and during that time you will visit places such as the Great Rift Valley, having a chance to explore some of the banana and coffee plantations along the way. During the Safari trip you will swap the bikes for a four wheel drive to go through some of the safari that is not safe to do so on bikes, but then its back on the bike for the final few days of exploring.

Africans Wildlife explored and what makes it such a great place for a safari

Africa is famous for its wildlife and safari trips. Thousands of people flock here year upon year to visit the magnificent sights of the wildlife in its own environment. You may often hear the terms the “big five” referring to the five large animals that inhabit South Africa. These are the Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Elephants and Buffalo that are often seen on safari trips around South Africa. 

If you have ever been lucky enough to see a male and female lion rubbing heads, you may not know but this is actually how they greet each other. Their roar can be heard over 5 miles away! 

Did you know that a baby elephant is blind when it is first-born? Baby elephants can often be seen sucking their trunks similar to a baby sucking its thumb for comfort.

You may wonder how similar leopards are to domestic cats – well they hunt in a similar way and possess many of the same traits but unlike domestic cat’s leopards actually like water and can often be found fishing in it quite successfully. 

These animals are just a few reasons why South Africa is the perfect place for a safari trip but there are a number of other reasons to visit too!

Safety in South Africa on a safari holiday

If you are considering booking a safari holiday to South Africa you may be concerned about the safety aspect of it. Safari holidays are actually quite safe, despite the number of wild animals you may come in to contact with, as long as you book with a reputable company and follow all the instructions you are given.

When on a safari, tour guides and staff members always have safety at the forefront of their mind and will not put you at risk just to get a better glimpse of an animal. They often have many have years of experience in safari trips and know where to go and where not to go. They can often pick up on signs that animals are not happy or feeling vulnerable and therefore likely to attack in which case they will keep you at a safe distance.

The main concern when going holiday to South African is actually the crimes committed by people not being attacked by animals. Unfortunately the crime rate in Africa is quite high and there has been a rise in gun point hostage situations over the last decade.  You need to ensure that you have thought carefully about your travel arrangements and try and pre book your travel rather than using “black cab” taxi firms.
