If you are wishing to drive whilst in South Africa, you are required by law to obtain an international drivers permit. If tourists are caught driving without a valid permit then they will receive a fine and will not be allowed to carry on with their journey. If you wish to hire a car in South Africa then you will also be required to carry a valid international driver’s permit. As in the UK it is law to always wear your seat belt when driving.
The drive between towns in South African can be massive and although the quality of the roads is not bad it is advisable to plan your route in advance and ensure you have adequate breaks scheduled in to avoid fatigue.
Drink driving laws are extremely strict in South Africa with a maximum alcohol blood content of 0.05% with equates to roughly one glass of wine for a women and 1.5 for a man.
